In traditional Chinese medicine
經絡-jīngluò, are the pathways through which the life-energy known as "qi" flows, that energy is also known as Prana in Indian Vedic tradition.

It is said that most of us common individuals have our channels clogged with all sorts of impurities and blockages and that is the root of all of our sickness and ailments. People who manage to unblock and purify their Nadi channels will come to enjoy great health and bodily strength and in higher stages people may even develop apparently amazing, almost superhuman like abilities often referred to as "Siddhi's" In Vedas that are kind of mind powers or Electromagnetic powers often seen among the practitioners of Internal arts such as Tai Qi Quan, Da cheng Quan, Bagua Quan, Yi Quan to some extent.
Even today there are Martial arts masters who can severely damage, hurt and even cause death just by pressing, hitting, slapping, striking, jabbing or even just by touching secret points along those energy channels obstructing the flow of Qi which is responsible for moving or pumping the blood thereby stopping the function of one or more internal organs. That art has long since became known as the Death Touch aka "Dim Mak" among the martial art community.
As we have seen above, the channels and their points have multi fold characteristics so that for example point can be used to harm someone as well as heal depending on what time of the day it is pressed, pinched, massaged, hit etc. and depending on what kind of Yi or intention the person pressing it has during that time, since positive thinking holds positive or healing energy and the negative holds the opposite.

The Main purpose of Yoga or Qi kung or any meditation practice for that matter is to purify and unlock those channels so that the life energy can flow unobstructed trough them and enrich our blood stream and brain with limitless amounts of fresh oxygen and energy thereby opening the door for higher levels of consciousness and contemplations that rise above our day to day materialistic thoughts and take us into the realm of Trance.
